Glenbrook North junior Eric Markus won the Illinois Junior Golf Association Senior Boys Open Golf Tournament at Old Orchard Country Club in Mount Prospect on July 10.
The Senior Division is for 16- to 18-year-olds. Markus' 16th birthday is in August.
Markus shot a 74, tying with another golfer for the low score out of about 70 competitors, and won the tournament in the first playoff hole.
After the win, he was ranked 49th out of 553 IJGA senior members based on points accumulated in IJGA tournaments to date.
Markus committed to playing in several tournaments this summer. In July, he competed in the national qualifier for the 2013 Maccabiah USA gold team in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.
He in enrolled in the Wildcat Golf Academy run by Northwestern University head Golf coach Pat Goss, who also coaches former Northwestern grad and top-ranked golfer Luke Donald, among others.
Markus will be competing for a spot on the GBN varsity Golf team this month after playing his first two years on the junior varsity team. In 2011, he won the Central Suburban League Junior Varsity Golf Tournament held at Glencoe Golf Course in October 2011.
The GBN Golf team hopes to make it back to the state playoffs this fall, returning several tournament-tested golfers in seniors Nick Jan, Harrison Marick, Jonathan Goldstein and Jae Lee, and juniors Nick Hardy and Brian Ohr.
