When the Children’s Research Fund North Suburban Board hosts its “All You Need Is Love” fundraiser on Oct. 18, it will be doing so for kids like Alexa Weiss, of Highland Park.

Two days before her third birthday, Alexa was diagnosed with a brain tumor. She then underwent surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. Two years later, she had a recurrence, and then surgery once more, followed by proton therapy.

Today, her mother Jamie Weiss said, “Alexa is living a normal, healthy life as a 7-year-old. She dances, she plays tennis and does gymnastics.”

When Rabbi Aaron Melman first stepped foot in Congregation Beth Shalom, he knew he’d found his home. That was 13 years ago, when the rabbi was just out of rabbinical school at The Jewish Theological Seminary, in New York City. At the time, he was interviewing for a position as an assistant rabbi, which he eventually received.
